Selection help

How to choose a grain planter

Four things decide which model fits, before price is even discussed.

Match the machine to the field size

Under about half a hectare, a handheld press seeder is the cheapest route. From half a hectare upward, a hand-push roller seeder or a double-row drill pays for itself in seed saved through even spacing.

Decide whether you need fertiliser at the same time

The hand-push model that plants seed and applies fertiliser in one pass removes a second trip across the field. If you broadcast fertiliser separately, the simpler roller seeder is enough.

Choose the drill for the crop you sell

A double-row drill with stainless steel metering suits maize, wheat and soybean sold by weight. Handheld press seeders are better for gap filling and for plots too small to drill.

Plan the minimum order

Handheld seeders carry a nine-set minimum order, which suits cooperatives and dealers. Larger machines are quoted from one set.

Questions

Grain Planter questions buyers ask

Answers written against the capacities and prices we publish, not against a template.

Which seed planter is best for a small farm?

Under half a hectare a handheld press seeder is enough and costs from US$7.50 per set. Above that, a hand-push roller seeder at US$36 to US$42 per set sows far more evenly. Farms planting several hectares usually move to the double-row seeding drill.

Can one machine plant seed and apply fertiliser?

Yes. The hand-push seeder and fertiliser applicator plants grain seed and places fertiliser in the same pass. It is quoted at US$66 to US$69 per set with a one-set minimum, and removes a separate fertiliser trip across the field.

What is the minimum order quantity for a seed planter?

The handheld press seeder carries a minimum order of nine sets, which suits cooperatives and equipment dealers. The hand-push roller seeder, the seeder-fertiliser combination and the double-row seeding drill are all quoted from a single set.

Which crops can your seed planters sow?

The listed ranges cover maize, corn, peanut, soybean, cotton and wheat. Plate and duckbill settings control seed spacing, so tell us the crop, the row spacing you want and the seed size and we will match the metering parts before shipping.
